Winter

Saku winters are mostly sunny and cold. Come with winter tyres from December to March. Heating is by air conditioners and a kerosene fan heater; the house dates from 1982, so bring a layer.
The sauna is at its best in winter: step out onto the deck into the cold air. Ski resorts are 25 to 50 minutes away by car.

Questions we get asked

Can a group of 10 rent the whole house?

Yes. TON is a single house for one group per night, with up to 12 guests. Four bedrooms: two upstairs with semi-double beds, two downstairs with futons. The rate is for the whole house: ¥40,000 per night on weekdays (Sunday to Thursday) for up to 4 guests, plus ¥7,000 per extra adult. Ten adults on a weekday are ¥82,000.

Is the sauna private?

Yes. The sauna is yours alone, 24 hours a day, at no extra charge. It is an electric Harvia stove in a cedar-lined room that fits 8 people. Cool down on the wood deck facing the rice fields, or in the bathtub filled with cold water. Swimwear is required. Children under 6 may not use the sauna.

Can we bring children?

Yes. Children aged 6 and under are not counted and stay free. Ages 7 to 12 are 60% of the adult rate. The living room has tatami floors and the downstairs bedrooms have futons, so there are no beds to fall out of. We do not have cribs.

Can we bring a dog?

Yes. Pets up to 10 kg, maximum two, any species, ¥5,000 per pet per night. Tell us the number and type when you book. Pets stay in a crate or pen indoors and may not enter the sauna room or the kitchen work area.

Can we work from the house?

Yes. There is a work room with a desk and power outlets facing the rice fields, free Wi-Fi throughout the house, and a washer-dryer. Stays of 2 nights or more are 15% off, 4 nights 20% off, 6 nights 25% off. For 14 nights or more, ask us about the rate.

Can we use the house for a day without staying overnight?

On weekdays (Monday to Thursday, excluding holidays) the whole house and sauna can be used for 6 hours between 9:00 and 22:00 for ¥22,000, up to 8 people. Book by Instagram DM or the official LINE account. Bedrooms are not included.

How do we get there from Tokyo?

By car, about 2 hours 30 minutes: Kan-etsu, Joshin-etsu and Chubu-Odan expressways to the Saku-Usuda interchange, then 2 minutes. By train, about 1 hour on the Hokuriku Shinkansen from Tokyo to Sakudaira, then 20 minutes by car. There is no shuttle, so rent a car at the station. Karuizawa is 40 minutes away by car.

What about winter?

From December to March the roads around the house can freeze in the morning and evening, so come with winter tyres. Heating is by air conditioners and a kerosene fan heater. The house was built in 1982 and is not as warm as a modern house, so bring an extra layer. Ski resorts are 25 to 50 minutes away by car.
